RepairClinic offers tips to reduce appliance and equipment energy consumption and prevent costly repairs Canton, Mich.— RepairClinic.com®, the trusted online store for replacement parts and free repair help for home appliances, outdoor power equipment and heating and cooling equipment, today shared nine tasks to help homeowners save money in their homes.

1. Clean out lint from the inside of the dryer and throughout its venting.

A dryer’s entire venting system should be cleaned out from the inside of the dryer to the outside vent cap at least once per year. It’s critical for proper air flow and operation. Heat and lint buildup within dryer venting is a dangerous situation, leading to thousands of fires in the U.S. and Canada every year. A long, vent-cleaning brush makes this an easy, do-it-yourself job.

2. Complete refrigerator maintenance.

a. Replace a worn refrigerator gasket or rubber door seal. b. Gently brush off and vacuum dust and dirt from refrigerator condenser coils.

3. Tune-up lawn mowers and other outdoor power equipment engines.

Shop the tune-up kit sale.

4. Clear leaves and other debris from central air condensing units.

Be sure the power is off before completing any maintenance.

5. Adjust the temperature setting on water heaters.

Many homeowners don’t pay attention to the water heater temperature setting that was set by the installer. It may be set at a temperature too warm or cool for a family’s needs. Also, most water heaters have a vacation setting for use when homeowners are away from their homes for an extended period, which can save money.

6. Use expanding foam with UV protection to seal off holes around home exteriors.

7. Check the venting registers and remove any rugs, drapes or furniture that may restrict air flow.

8. Replace the furnace or air handler filter.

A furnace or air handler filter should be changed every three months. Homes located in dusty areas may require more frequent replacement. Clean air filters are critical to home air quality. Also, a dirty air filter will cause a furnace’s fan and motor to work harder and therefore, consume more energy. A dirty air filter restricts air flow, eventually leading to component failure and expensive repairs. Shop air filters

9. Pay attention to appliances and equipment for any changes in performance or appearance.

Take action at the first signs of problems. Many major repairs can be avoided when changes in performance are noticed (i.e. a dryer taking longer to dry clothing), steps are taken to troubleshoot and repairs are completed.
